OXNARD, Calif. — Oxnard College Baseball earned its first Western State Conference victory of the season on Tuesday, defeating cross-county rival Ventura College, 10-2, at home.
The Condors used timely hitting, disciplined at-bats, and a strong performance on the mound to take control early and never look back, improving their conference standing with a decisive win over the Pirates.
Oxnard opened the scoring in the second inning when AB Crist-Bryd lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home Bryce Weege for a 1-0 lead. The Condors added two more runs in the third, highlighted by an RBI double from Jacob Stringer and an RBI single from Jonas Ballesteros to make it 3-0.
The Condors broke the game open in the fourth inning, capitalizing on Ventura miscues to score two unearned runs and extend the lead to 5-0. Ventura finally got on the board in the sixth, but Oxnard answered immediately with a four-run inning that put the game out of reach.
In the decisive sixth, Ballesteros came through again with a two-run single, and Crist-Bryd followed with a two-run hit to stretch the advantage to 9-1. Oxnard tacked on one more insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Damian Cabrera.
Kekai Adams turned in a strong start for the Condors, pitching 7.2 innings while allowing two runs on nine hits and keeping Ventura from generating any sustained momentum. Chris Margarella closed out the final 1.1 innings in relief to secure the victory.
At the plate, Oxnard was led by several standout performances. Jonas Ballesteros finished 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Bryce Weege also went 3-for-5. Jacob Stringer scored three runs and drove in one, and AB Crist-Bryd delivered three RBI in a clutch performance. The Condors totaled 10 hits and drew six walks in a balanced offensive effort.
Ventura was paced by Hector Pina, who collected three hits and scored both Pirate runs, but Oxnard's clean defensive game and consistent offensive pressure proved too much to overcome.
With the win, the Condors not only claimed their first WSC victory of the year, but did so against a familiar rival in convincing fashion.
The series continues on Thursday with the Condors travelling to VC for a 2:30 start.
