OXNARD, Calif. — The No. 2-seeded Oxnard College Condors survived a fierce challenge from No. 15 Cypress College, earning a 3–2 victory in the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoff Round 2 on Saturday afternoon at the Condors Nest. With the win, Oxnard advances to Round 3, where they will host powerhouse Mt. SAC on Tuesday at 1:00 PM.
The Condors struck early and controlled the tempo in the opening half. Luis Gonzalez broke through in the 5th minute with an unassisted goal, putting Oxnard ahead 1–0. Moments later, Ernesto Rodriguez doubled the lead with a clinical finish in the 11th minute, energizing the home crowd.
Cypress responded late in the half when Erik Hernandez capitalized on a loose ball in the 44th minute, trimming the deficit to 2–1 heading into halftime.
After the break, the Chargers equalized in the 63rd minute on an unassisted strike from Brandon Procopio, tying the match at 2–2.
Oxnard reclaimed the lead just two minutes later. Rodriguez, who delivered one of his best performances of the season, buried his second goal of the match in the 65th minute, the the game-winner.
Cypress battled down a man after goalkeeper Demian Baldovinos was issued a red card just four minutes into the match. Despite the disadvantage, the Chargers managed two goals on just two shots, making every opportunity count.
Oxnard held firm in the closing minutes, anchored by goalkeeper Jesus Gonzalez, who completed the full 90 minutes in net. The Condors outshot Cypress 5–2 and held a 3–1 advantage in corner kicks.
The victory propels Oxnard into the Regional Playoff Round 3, where they will host Mt. SAC—one of the premier programs in California. The showdown is set for Tuesday at 1:00 PM at the Condors Nest.
